Chris Dodd on Torture

WRITTEN BY JONATHAN KROHN
THURSDAY, 07 MAY 2009 09:49

Chris Dodd is speaking out on torture, and he seems ready for the witch-hunt that he and his colleagues have been preparing for.  In a discussion with different questioners, Sen. Dodd expands upon what his personal political agenda, and that of his fellow Liberals, has in store for torture and those who supported all of the measures they consider that category to include.  POLITICO's Ben Smith reports:

For openers, Dodd criticizes the White House for de-classifying the so-called "torture memos" without having a follow-up plan for dealing with the fallout -- quipping, "I don't know who the genius was in the room that night."

That's cold, even for Dodd.  He knows just as well as I do, if not better, that "the genius in the room that night" was President Barack Obama.  It was his plan and his idea.  That's a slap in the face of Barack Obama from one of his own.  Nonetheless, however, Dodd's "follow-up question...What are you gonna do with that?" has a very evident answer for him.  He wants to take the battle to the former administration.  The same POLITICO article also reported:

When a questioner asked him if such a probe should go "as high as Cheney's office," Dodd interrupted to say, "You gotta go where you gotta go."

Did I catch that?  "You gotta go where you gotta go."  Wow.  Dodd is prepared to take things as high as he can to get his own political agenda passed! Do you honestly think that if the former administration had been that of a Liberal Democrat he would say the same things?  No!  He obviously had no objections to questionable characteristics of President Obama's nominees, so why should he have objections to his policies, or the policies of a loyal Democrat of his ilk for example?  Dodd, is using policy to get back at political rivals so that he can get political points.  He is being a typical politician.  This is just another wonderful lesson in "Doddism."

NOON FOREIGN POLICY UPDATE

WRITTEN BY JONATHAN KROHN
WEDNESDAY, 06 MAY 2009 11:08

A little update on President Karzai and his meetings with President Obama; nothing about his running mate so far.  I have heard that President Karzai mentioned the importance of minimizing 'civilian casualties.' APvia Brietbart.com:

Calling civilian deaths unacceptable, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said he would talk with President Barack Obama on Wednesday about allegations that dozens of civilians died in a U.S. bombing run in western Afghanistan, the president's office said.

Civilian casualties, I wonder if he will mention the civilian casualties his running mate caused in the '90's?  Are those civilian casualties important to Karzai?  Secondly, I am wondering how our President will respond to Karzai's allegations against our country.  Will he just sit there like he has at other meetings with leaders who said such things, or will he make a statement?  We must wait and see.

Nuclear arms update!  President Obama is speaking out on Israel's nuclear arsenal.  Eli Lake's Washington Time's article:

President Obama's efforts to curb the spread of nuclear weapons threaten to expose and derail a 40-year-old secret U.S. agreement to shield Israel's nuclear weapons from international scrutiny, former and current U.S. and Israeli officials and nuclear specialists say.

This could be very sad for Israel, and our relationship with that country.  If President Obama goes through with this, Israel's protection against Iran could be hurt very drastically, and such protection is looking more and more important as Iran's leaders get more and more anxious.

"HEARTBREAK HILL": THAT BEING CAPITAL HILL OF COURSE

WRITTEN BY JONATHAN KROHN
WEDNESDAY, 06 MAY 2009 10:40

Well the verdict is in and we have another tragic story of political expediency boiling up on Capitol Hill.  America's newest Democrat Senator, Arlen Specter, has gotten a big slap in the face by his new political party.  Arlen has often stated that Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid will give Specter "full seniority rights" as a new Democrat Senator; the truth is, if this was true, it was a political move.  ROLL CALL reports:

Despite promises from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) that Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) would retain his seniority after switching parties, Specter will be put at the end of the seniority line on all his committees but one under a resolution approved on the floor late Tuesday.

Not only has he been disowned by his old party, the Republican Party, but he has now been disowned by his new party.  The new Senator, according to Glenn Thrush on POLITICO's HUDDLE:

...has said he’s not an automatic 60th vote on filibusters. Nonetheless, his new Democratic colleagues have officially  designated him  No. 60 — voting to shove the 29-year Senate vet to the back of the line (behind Roland Burris and Kirsten Gillibrand) when it  comes to committee seniority.

The celebration is over, the champagne bottle is empty, the "love" from his new party has faded away, and the new Democrat is being treated as any newcomer to Congress is; put in the back of the line for appointments.  However, the Specter situation was quite predictable.

The Democrat Party does not want to take chances with a man like Specter.  He is Liberal, but not Liberal enough for some, and he is merely an accessory to help them get a sixty-vote-filibuster-proof-majority, as apposed to a key Democrat such as Sen. Reid or Sen. Dodd.  The Dems don't really want Specter anymore then the Republicans do, but, for their own political gain they need Specter.

KARZAI AND THE WARLORDS

KARZAI AND THE WARLORDS PDF Print E-mail
WRITTEN BY JONATHAN KROHN
TUESDAY, 05 MAY 2009 22:26

President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan is in the United States today, and he is fresh off of angering the more Conservative branch of his country.  The Associated Press reports:

President Hamid Karzai chose a powerful warlord accused of rights abuses as one of his vice presidential running mates on Monday, hours before leaving for meetings in Washington with President Barack Obama and Pakistan's president.

The selection of Mohammad Qasim Fahim, a top commander in the militant group Jamiat-e-Islami during Afghanistan's 1990s civil war, drew immediate criticism from human rights groups.

A 2005 Human Rights Watch report, "Blood-Stained Hands," found "credible and consistent evidence of widespread and systematic human rights abuses and violations of international humanitarian law" were committed by Jamiat commanders, including  Fahim.

Karzai was "insulting the country" with the choice, the New York-based group said Monday.

Fahim served as Karzai's first vice president during the country's interim government put in place after the ouster of the Taliban in the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. During the 2004 election, Karzai dropped Fahim from his ticket in favor of Ahmad Zia Massood — the brother of resistance hero Ahmad Shah Massood, who was assassinated by al-Qaida two days before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Under Afghan law, the president has two vice presidents.

Did I read that first part correctly?  President Karzai hightailed it over here to meet with President Obama, almost immediately after he picked an extremely RADICAL running mate?  The answer is yes.  A little bit of typical politics, don't you think?  At least he will be able to hold off the wrath of his country's media from him directly a little while longer, but the question that remains as we wait to hear about the meetings between the Presidents is if President Obama will confront President Karzai on his RADICAL running mate.  Will that be on the roster, or will the Presidents only discuss things suitable to each one's political agenda?  I believe it will be the latter.  As we know, both President Karzai and President Obama enjoy playing to their base.  They enjoy preaching to the choir.  Going into the unpredictable territory of confrontation on a controversial issue is a little out of each of their comfort zones, and it is highly unlikely that they will break new ground on this front in their meetings this week.  However, we will wait and see.

Specter and the Polls

WRITTEN BY JONATHAN KROHN
MONDAY, 04 MAY 2009 12:29

An update on America's newest Democrat Senator, Arlen Spector.  The numbers are in, and we now know why Spector was worried!  POLITICO's Congressional blogger Glenn Thrush reports:

Over the weekend, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on the gory details of that internal Arlen Specter poll that launched him into the    Democratic Party. (h/t JMart)

   Three takeaway points:

   1. Specter's vote for the stimulus branded him a traitor with the GOP base, cutting his approval rating in half over a period of weeks.

    2. The mass exodus of eastern Pa. moderates has pushed the party far out of Arlen's safety zone.

    3. He trailed Pat Toomey by 15 percent in a three-way Republican primary.

Ouch.  A senior Senator losing by 15 percent in a primary with THREE CONTENDERS.  Ouch.  Specter was not a loss to the Republican Party, because, as we see in this poll, he would have lost anyway!  However, Arlen's woes are not over.  POLITICO's Glenn Thrush also reported some other numbers in an early post on his blog:

New Democrat Arlen Specter leads Pat Toomey, the guy who drove him out of the GOP, by a 53-33 margin, according to a new Quinnipiac poll.

But he only beats former Homeland Security chief/Penn. Gov. Tom Ridge by a three-point margin, 46-43, the poll finds.

The poll finds that Democrats, by and large, are okay with Specter's switch. Republicans, on the other hand, hate the guy -- with Specter struggling to hit double-digits with GOP registrants. Details:

In the Specter-Toomey matchup, Republicans back Toomey 74 – 18 percent while Democrats go with their new convert 85–4  percent. Men back Specter 47 – 41 percent, as do women 59 – 26 percent. Union households go Democratic 62–27 percent.

In a Specter-Ridge face-off, Republicans go with Ridge 82 – 10 percent, while Specter takes Democrats 78 – 14 percent. Men   shift to Ridge 50 – 41 percent, while women remain Democratic 51 – 37 percent. Union households back Specter 57 – 34  percent.
--------------------------------

Arlen decision to save his proverbial "political hide" might have paid off after all!  However, he has certainly lost respect with, not only PA Republicans, as we saw in the previous poll and this poll, but American's across the country.  More importantly, however, is one factor unreachable by the poll numbers; the people's principles.  When the people are given the facts, as Toomey will hopefully be able to present them in this election cycle, they may have a better chance of turning on Arlen.  The Spector campaign is going to have to fight, tooth and nail, to preserve itself.  It is my personal opinion that Arlen will lose, however.  Specter is not a loss to the Republican Party, but he will be a loss to Democrats if he loses.  They are going to bet it all on Arlen Specter in 2010.  They know that if he loses to Toomey their margin of a filibuster proof Senate will die with him.  If Specter cannot live up to this 53-33 poll, then it will prove that big name endorsers, who we will definitely see in 2010, and money cannot overcome principle.  If Specter wins, however, it will be a victory for the Democrat Party, not Specter.

Obam's cracking down on...tax evasion?

WRITTEN BY JONATHAN KROHN
MONDAY, 04 MAY 2009 12:03

During another nationally televised press conference, the President of the United States of America told America that he is going to crack down on tax evasion.  Really?  Nice!  Does that mean that he will crack down on Timothy Geithner, a professed tax evader, or maybe he would prosecute Kathleen Sebelius, his Health and Human Services Secretary who forgot to pay her taxes as well!  Maybe he would go after former Sen. Tom Daschle, or Nancy Killefer, both of whom failed to pay their taxes as well.  However, President Obama seemed more focused on anger at those evil rich folk who have overseas bank accounts.  However, I know the best way for Barack Obama to conquer tax avoidance, he could lower taxes.  What a radical concept!

If the President lowered taxes, tax evaders might have an easier time paying their taxes.  Certainly, it won't solve all of our problems, but it will certainly be a step in the right direction on all fronts.  It would also be another way to help boost our economic progress because the American people are able to spend money in the areas where they want, meaning that jobs can be created, and economic progress can continue.  Hmmm, boosting the economy and helping avoid tax evasion, sounds good to me!

Jack Kemp

WRITTEN BY JONATHAN KROHN
SUNDAY, 03 MAY 2009 09:20

Today every American mourns the loss of maybe one our nation's strongest member of the Conservative movement, and certainly was one of the GREATEST members of the Reagan revolution.  I admire, and I think every American admires, his work on the Kemp-Roth tax cuts.  I admire his strength to get through Reagan's spending cuts, and his love for Conservative principles.  He has inspired Americans since his time in Congress and his memory must live on.

He is the kind of man that we must all look to.  An all-American at heart, a family man in action, and a Conservative in principle.  If one politician in the past 30 years has made a greater impact on the modern Conservative movement besides Goldwater, Reagan, Kemp, and Gingrich I would like to know his name because there is none.  Kemp has made a great impact on America and, specifically, the Conservative movement in America.  May he rest in peace, but may his principles live on forever.

Calling all...congressional wives?

POLITICO.com's Ben Smith repoted about a DC Documentary series is looking for "commanding congressional wives, sassy socialites, and dynamic divas in charge."  The casting call itself tells us that "We want to see how young, dynamic D.C. functions in a demanding town that is filled with major power players."  Did I hear that right; "...young, dynamic D.C."?  I think I did.  When was the last time you heard a casting director refer to D.C. as "young" and "dynamic?"  It certainly wasn't like that during the Bush era...

Click here to read Ben Smith's post, as well as the entire casting call.

The Dull Obama

WRITTEN BY JONATHAN KROHN
THURSDAY, 30 APRIL 2009 07:29

After his 100th day Presidential Press Conference, the votes are in, and earlier today Jonathan Martin and John F. Harris of the POLITICO cast their ballot in a piece examining the President's mood last night.  The piece entitled "Obama works to avoid being exciting" brings up a very valid point about the President's mood last night.  He was not campaign-Obama, he was not town hall-Obama, and he was not debate-Obama, he was more of a man trying too hard to look Presidential.  Martin and Harris wrote:

The television networks have given President Barack Obama airtime for three prime-time news conferences in three months for an obvious reason: He is an exciting politician governing in a too-exciting-for-comfort time.

But this was sometimes hard to remember during Obama’s hour-long outing before White House reporters Tuesday night.

The questions were greeted by slow nods and thoughtful pauses. When the answers came, they were precise,  considered, sometimes academic, always articulate, not usually all that newsy, and, let’s face it, occasionally  long-winded.

Far from electric, this was a tranquilizing performance. So much so that it was impossible not to conclude that a president who certainly knows how to be exciting was making a calculated effort not to be.

 -------------------------------

This article is too true in its examination.  However, it makes one wonder, is this the effect of his teleprompter reliance?

FIRST 100 DAYS ANALYSIS

WRITTEN BY JONATHAN KROHN
WEDNESDAY, 29 APRIL 2009 19:17

The Obama Administration has, after 3 months and 9 days, reached the famous 100 days landmark.  With 100 days marked off of his calendar our new President has already done many things quite unprecedented in previous eras of American history.  He has committed more money then any President has in their first year in his first 100 days.  He has given into the demands of Germany and France at the G20 summit in a dominated manner that would make our founders bury their heads in shame.  He has given out memos on torture and demonized American patriots who made the tough decisions on harsh interrogation in a manner that disgusts many Americans.  He has already practically “fired” a CEO of a private American company.  He has forced, by issuing an executive order for tax dollars, Americans who have religious and moral views diametrically opposed to embryonic stem cell research fund such research.  He has put “friendship” with the rogue dictators of Cuba and the dictator of Venezuela before a strong relationship with our allies in South America.  He has hardly been tough on our enemies abroad, instead focusing on meeting with the America and Israel hating President of Iran.  These, and many other things, are some of the “accomplishments” of our new President over his first 100 days.  If one looks at all of these aspects that have defined his first 100 days with a level head it is clear that our President has failed to protect the people and their rights.  He has, on the other hand, made a great accomplishment for his own political agenda by expanding the size and scope of government.  He has promoted his own agenda by taking greater and greater control of the free market and, thereby, the people themselves.  Obama has set up a governmental system in which the expansion of government comes before the people, and he will do whatever is necessary to push that agenda.  He has failed the people on the diplomatic stage by giving into the wants of foreign leaders before standing up for America.  He has made America weaker then she was before on the diplomatic stage, and has hurt our image around the world.

In conclusion, for putting his priorities out of order, for increasing the size and scope of government, for making hurting America’s image on the international stage, for making America weaker on the world stage, and for hurting the free market, Barack Obama has earned an “F.”

"I'M NOT SATISFIED..."

WRITTEN BY JONATHAN KROHN
WEDNESDAY, 29 APRIL 2009 19:05

Within the first ten minutes of his speech to the press on April 29th, the President cut to the chase and summarized his entire list of complaints:

"I'm not satisfied..."

HE ISN'T SATISFIED?  What isn't he satisfied about?  He's President. He has sixty votes in the Senate, a firm majority in the House, he has spent more money in the first 100 days of his administration then President Bush spent on the war over its entire duration, he has sent taxpayer funds towards embryonic stem cell research, he has pushed his own political agenda further in his first 100 days then almost any President in history has in their first 100 days, and that's just the beginning!  However, nonetheless, he's not satisfied.

Why isn't he satisfied?  He isn't satisfied simply by the nature of his political ideology.  The Liberal's goal is to perpetually increase the size and scope of government, and so they will NEVER be satisfied until there is nothing area left for the government to expand its powers into.  Barack Obama isn't satisfied even after doing the many things he has done that Liberalism has long had on its to-do list because there is MORE areas left for the government to expand its power into.

REP. KEITH ELLISON ON HIS ARRESTED

WRITTEN BY JONATHAN KROHN
TUESDAY, 28 APRIL 2009 15:04

An update on the arrests in front of the Sudanese Embassy's yesterday.

This morning one of the arrested, Rep. Keith Ellison, was on The Bill Press Show talking about his arrest yesterday.  POLITICO.com's "Shenanigans" blog reports:

Bill Press and Rep. Keith Ellison ham it up this morning on Press's radio show.

Ellison, remember, was arrested yesterday for protesting outside the Sudanese embassy. It was the Congressman's first time -- being arrested.

"We knew we were going to get arrested," he said. "The police were pretty good, I can't fault them at all. They said, 'here's the line - you stay over here  and everything will be all right.'" But why do that?

"Even though you know you're going to get out, it actually is disconcerting. It's like, 'Wow, ok, my hands can't move, they're back there and they're  behind my back and I can't move'em if I want to, and I'm in this tiny little paddy wagon and you know it's bad."

He was in the clink for about four hours. "I'm just saying, under the best conditions it's an unpleasant experience," he said.

The other side of the story is that no one has seen any of the so-called "Right-Wing Extremists" in jail for protesting recently... Of course, the mainstream media won't report either the story itself or this it's flip side in any thoughtful detail.
